Jakarta provincial government looking to place ads on 1,000 bus stops and 61 footbridges to fund their renovations

Many bus stops in the capital are so run down that sometimes we don’t realize they’re actually bus stops. Besides, buses pick up and drop off passengers wherever they please anyways.

But perhaps that will soon change. The Jakarta provincial government is planning to fix and renovate 1,000 bus stops in the city, along with 61 footbridges.

The bus stops and footbridges will also be plastered with ads in order to fund the renovations and their maintenance.

“Many companies can use the space for ads or company promotion, and we can increase Jakarta’s income,” said Andri Yansah, head of Jakarta’s Transportation Agency, as quoted by CNN Indonesia yesterday.

Four companies have so far pledged to fund the renovations and maintenance of the bus stops and footbridges in return for public ad space.

“We don’t want bus stops and footbridges to be left astray, making Jakarta dirty. If we can develop the designs to accommodate ad space, then why not? It could beautify [the bus stops and footbridges], especially if we install neon signs,” said Jakarta Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat.

According to CNN Indonesia, there are 3,000 bus stops and 301 footbridges in Jakarta. It’s not yet known when the government will start the renovations.
