Jakarta provincial government to build Athletes’ Village in Kemayoran for 2018 Asian Games

Jakarta Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat

The 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta are only three years away. As is customary for city’s hosting a major sporting event of this magnitude, Jakarta will provide accommodations for competing athletes during their stay in the city.

Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said the city plans to build an Athletes’ Village situated on an 11 hectare site in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

“But the land in Kemayoran belongs to the State Secretariat, so we are writing a letter to President Joko Widodo [to seek permission to build there],” Djarot said yesterday, as quoted by Tempo.

“If we get permission, we’ll build [the Athletes’ Village] immediately.”

Jakarta Regional Secretary Saefullah added that, despite plans to build an athletes’ village, the provincial government is also planning on providing athletes with hotel accommodation during the Asian Games.

“If hotels in Jakarta can accommodate athletes, then we’ll give [the athletes] priority,” Saefullah said.
