Jakarta Police say there were 80 cases of motorcycle robbery in January

People are worried about a recent rash of motorcycle robberies around Jakarta, with fake BBM alerts being circulated about dangerous thieves and the government promising tighter security and more CCTV cameras. But have there really been that many motorcycle robberies recently?

The Jakarta Police have reported that there were 80 cases of robbery that occurred in the capital during January 2015. The cases were scattered throughout various areas of Jakarta and its satellite cities of Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi.

The January records also show that the largest number of robberies occurred in South Jakarta with 17 cases.

The head of Jakarta’s Police Public Relations Division, Commissioner Martinus Sitompul, told Tribunnews that the police had found the culprits behind 45 of the cases so far.

So did January reflect a huge increase in motorcycle robberies? According to Martinus, the number of robberies actually decreased compared to their previous data.

However, he also said the nature of the crimes had become more brutal. He said many of the recent robbers did not hesitate to injure or even kill their victims.
