While we still haven’t heard of any updates regarding the implementation of the planned 911-style national hotline for emergencies, at least here in Jakarta we can look forward to being able to summon police officers at the tap of our mobile phone screens soon.
The Jakarta Metro Police have announced that they will launch a mobile app called Siaga Reserse (Investigators on Alert) which will allow the capital’s citizens to report crimes through it.
“We hope by the end of September the public will be able to download it. Right now we’re socializing it,” said Grand Commissioner Rudy Heryanto Adi Nugroho, director of the Public Crimes Investigation Unit at the Jakarta Metro Police, as quoted by Kompas.
Rudy said the app will be able to detect the user’s location, and the user would only have to tap the “Lapor” (report) button on the screen. He said that, within seconds, an operator would call the user to confirm the report, after which police officers would be dispatched to the scene.
“I hope that with this app the police can be dispatched even quicker to the scene. [For example] for what used to be 10 minutes [dispatch time from the call] can be reduced to 6 minutes,” he said.
In addition, the app will also allow users take and send photos relevant to the crime they’re reporting if necessary.
To avoid misuse of the app, users will be required to register and provide their personal information in accordance to their KTP ID cards, as well as active phone numbers and phone numbers of relatives and/or friends.
The app will be free to download and use. However, it is reportedly only going to be available for download on the Google Play Store for Android devices.
