Although today’s heavy rain indicated an auspicious start to the Chinese New Year, one group that isn’t taking any chances about unfortunate events occurring during the celebrations is the Jakarta Police, who have deployed approximately 3,320 personnel to 279 temples throughout the city as part of Operation “Liong Jaya.”
“We’ve deployed 3,320 personnel to secure temples that are under the jurisdiction of the City Police,” said the Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Unggung Cahyono today, as quoted by Rimanews.
Furthermore, Unggung said that security teams would continue to be deployed at temples throughout the next three days, with 970 officers on duty and 2,250 more readied in case of emergency.
The police chief said that Operation Liong Jaya was about more than just safeguarding the temples but also to anticipate an influx of criminals that come to Jakarta annually during the Chinese New Year. He said that a police raid on Wednesday night seized 21 tons of marijuana.
