The Jakarta Police have taken preventive measures to ensure that the national workers’ strike – planned from today until November 27 – doesn’t descend into chaos in the capital.
6,000 police personnel are to be deployed at various demonstration locations throughout Jabodetabek.
“The locations that will be secured are mainly Bekasi, the Pulogadung area, KBN Marunda up to Tanjung Priok, and Tangerang,” said Jakarta Police Spokesman Mohammad Iqbal, as quoted by Metro TV.
Iqbal added that the Jakarta Police have prepared water cannon tanks in case the workers become anarchic during their protests.
The Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (KSPI) expects 4 million to 5 million workers to go on strike around 22 provinces, though it’s not clear how many of those are from the capital.
The workers are protesting against a new government regulation that they feel doesn’t entitle them to an adequate annual salary raise.
