Jakarta last in “Safe Cities Report,” Ahok: That’s a matter for the police

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama isn’t all too bothered by The Economist’s “Safe Cities Index 2015” report that placed Jakarta dead last in their ranking of 50 major cities in the world.

Even if The Economist’s survey holds up (we certainly have an axe to grind with the report), Ahok said that matters of city security is the police’s problem.

“You should ask the police. We’ve installed CCTVs, and we’ll secure places that aren’t safe,” Ahok said at City Hall yesterday, as quoted by Merdeka

Ahok added that the provincial government is only responsible for assisting the police in keeping the city safe.

“We’ve donated more than 300 motorcycles recently to the Infantry Brigade and the police. We’re also monitoring every corner [of the city],” he said.

In The Economist’s “Safe Cities Index 2015” report, Jakarta scored a grand total of 53.71 points, meaning our capital placed 50th out of the 50 cities surveyed, behind cities including Tehran and Johannesburg.
