Rp 7 million AND your own designated lane. It’s good to be a Transjakarta bus driver
Jakarta laborers are green with envy that Transjakarta drivers and parking attendants can earn two to three times their monthly wage in Jakarta. The laborers are calling for an increase of the city’s minimum wage.
“Transjakarta drivers earn Rp 7 million [per month], parking attendants Rp 5 million. Why is it so hard for laborers to earn even Rp 3 million?” said Indonesian Confederation of laborers Union (KSPI) secretary general Muhammad Rusdi at a protest in front of City Hall on Tuesday.
Rusdi thinks that a provincial minimum wage of Rp 3 million is absolutely feasible. He based this on the fact that acting Governor of Jakarta Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama once said the minimum wage for a decent life in Jakarta should be Rp 4 million.
As of this year, the provincial minimum wage in Jakarta is Rp 2.4 million. According to Warta Kota, acting Governor Ahok refused the steep increase in next year’s provincial minimum wage to RP 3.1 million, reasoning that factory owners would feel the biggest strain from such an increase, given the low rate of inflation in the country.
