One officer from the North Jakarta Class I Immigration Office was killed, police said, when three Uzbeks who were detained on suspicion of involvement in terrorism broke free from the office’s detention facility.
Densus 88, the National Police’s counter-terrorism unit, held a press conference yesterday to announce the suspected terrorists’ escape on April 10.
The three Uzbeks were from a group of four men who were apprehended by Indonesian authorities on April 4. The four were charged with spreading terrorist propaganda online and being part of an undisclosed international terror group.
“[They were] detained at the immigration office as they awaited deportation to their home country,” Densus 88 spokesman Grand Commissioner Aswin Siregar said.
At 4am on April 10, three of the four Uzbeks smashed through the ceiling of their cell in order to escape. On their way out, they attacked guards on duty using knives obtained from the pantry. The guards were about to have their suhoor (pre-fast) meal when they were assaulted.
One immigration officer named Adi Widodo passed away, while three suffered major wounds and one suffered minor wounds.
The three Uzbeks have not been recaptured as of this article’s publication.
