Jakarta on high flood alert as Bogor enters peak rainy season

Kampung Pulo, East Jakarta, is often inundated by flood from the Ciliwung River

We Jakartans know we’re in trouble whenever it rains in Bogor. Well, brace yourselves for the possibility of major flooding in Jakarta, as meteorologists are predicting that it is going to rain for four straight days in Bogor. And that’s just the start.

The head of the Dramaga Climatology Station in Bogor, Dedi Sucahyono, said rain is going to pour down on Bogor and its surrounding areas for the remainder of the month and into February.

“The third week of January is the peak of the rainy season this year,” Dedi said yesterday, as quoted by Tempo

Dedi said that during the peak of the rainy season, people in Bogor can expect high intensity rains that sometimes borders on the extreme.

Year after year, water from the rainfall in Bogor is often carried downstream on the Ciliwung River to Jakarta, causing flooding in the capital. Dedi said the people of Jakarta, especially those who live near the Ciliwung River banks, should brace for another round of floods.
