We can all agree that Jakarta is not the most pedestrian-friendly city in the world. What few sidewalks the capital does have are often in such a state of disrepair that they are good for little besides parking space for motorcycles and kaki limas.
But the government is not completely neglecting pedestrians in this year’s budget Hoping to makes the streets a little easier to navigate for those using public transportation (and perhaps for all those wandering Pokemon hunters) the government recently announced that it will spend Rp 250 billion this year on fixing and widening sidewalks in 48 locations throughout Jakarta this year.
“We have entered into the contract bidding process. We expect at the latest that all the contracts will already be signed by early next month,” said Yusmada Faizal, head of Jakarta’s Roads Agency, through a statement on Thursday.
According Yusmada, repairs on six of the locations will be done directly through his department while others will be handled by the local governments in each subdistrict.
The six locations being handled by the Roads Agency will also some of their sidewalks widened. Those locations include Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta; Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta; Blok M, South Jakarta; Rusun Daan Mogot, West Jakarta; the area around Terminal Rawamangun, East Jakarta; and Pluit, North Jakarta.
