Jakarta gov’t planning to build and enforce designated pick-up/drop-off spots for ojeks to prevent traffic jams

The proliferation of online ojeks (motorcycle taxi hailing services) in Jakarta has had a huge effect on many people’s lives by creating more convenient transportation options and employment opportunities. But the government thinks the huge number of ojeks on the road is also creating a problem, with all of the random streetside pickups and drop-offs exacerbating the capital’s already awful traffic.

“All this time, when online motorcycle taxi drop off or pick up passengers on the road, it has been chaotic so it creates traffic jams,” said Bambang Prihartono, the head of transportation management for the Greater Jakarta Area at the Ministry of Transportation, as quoted by Warta Kota.

To combat this, Bambang said the government would create specialized parking areas in busy parts of the city where ojeks of all stripes will need to occupy while waiting to pick up or drop off their passengers. However, he said the project would first be tested with a pilot project in Dukuh Atas, South Jakarta in land previously owned by PT Pasar Jaya.

Do you think specialized areas for ojek pick-ups and drop-offs are necessary to fight traffic, or will it just be an added inconvenience for drivers and passengers? Let us know what you think in the comments.
