Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has tested positive for COVID-19, the provincial government has confirmed, and is now in self-isolation.
In a press release, the Jakarta Provincial Government said Anies took a swab test on Monday afternoon and was diagnosed with the disease early Tuesday morning.
The release noted that Anies held several in-person meetings with Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza “Ariza” Patria last week. The deputy governor tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, saying he was likely infected by a staffer.

Like Ariza, Anies said he’s not exhibiting any serious symptoms and has placed himself in self-isolation.
“I will continue to work and lead meetings virtually. Since March, we have gotten used to working virtually, so, God willing, this won’t disrupt any policy making,” he said.
Also like Ariza, Anies did not make an explicit connection between his diagnosis and the fact that he met with Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab shortly after the latter’s return to Indonesia. Dozens who attended mass rallies and gatherings by FPI in honor of the firebrand cleric have since tested positive for COVID-19.
