Jakarta Government will start construction on 9 more flyovers this year

We can all probably agree that Jakarta needs a lot better public transportation and a lot fewer vehicles on the road if the traffic situation is ever going to significantly improve. However, there are other, smaller things that we all know is making the macet even worse than it should be – things like horribly organized and enforced intersections that inevitably become clusterf*cks during rush hour.

One solution to these infernal intersections is to simply build a flyover (ie. overpass), allowing both roads to flow freely (in theory) and it looks like Jakarta is going to get a lot more of them in the near future.

“This year we will build nine (flyovers). They will be modeled on the Permata Hijau flyover,” Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said today as quoted by Kompas.

“What for? So the streets will be clear and there won’t be any traffic jams due to red lights.”

Ahok did not specify where the flyovers will be built. But according to data from the Jakarta Department of Road Planning, construction is scheduled to start this year on flyovers in Bintaro, Cipinang Lontar and Jalan Panjang in Kebon Jeruk.
