A viral video showing the mistreatment of a little girl by her teacher at a kindergarten in West Jakarta has circulated online, prompting an official investigation.

The video clip, pulled from CCTV footage, shows the kindergarten teacher pulling and violently shaking one of her pupils, who looks terrified and is crying during the ordeal.

Another teacher was also in the same classroom at the time, but does not appear to take notice of the violence against the pupil during the video.

The Jakarta Education Board is now investigating the authenticity of the clip  and have promised harsh sanctions against the school if one of their teachers actually roughed up a student.

“Truth be told, we found out about this case through the media. We will immediately carry out an investigation into the allegations. We are deeply concerned by this,” said Jakarta Education Board Secretary Susi Nurhati, as quoted by Kompas today.

Susi said the school, which was identified in the media as Kidea Podomoro Preschool and Kindergarten, is owned by a private foundation. It’s possible that the board would recommend for the revocation of the school’s permit as a result of this incident.

A teacher at the school told Kompas that the incident did happen and that the teacher who assaulted her student has been fired by the school.
