A video showing a disturbing and dramatic vehicle chase in Jakarta has gone viral, one involving an angry mob of motorists and a driver police alleged was high on meth at the time.

The video, taken yesterday on Jalan Hayam Wuruk in Tamansari, West Jakarta, shows a black car illegally driving in the TransJakarta busway while a mob of motorists on foot crowds around the car to attack it. The desperate driver, stuck in the busway lane due to the TransJakarta bus in front of it and other cars behind it, then tries to escape the mob’s wrath by driving over the busway lane’s high concrete barrier, which it obviously failed to do so.

According to the Taman Sari Police, the mob gave chase to the car because the driver, identified as 40-year-old Jakarta citizen named Franky, attempted a hit-and-run after previously scraping his car against a pedestrian (an incident not shown in the video). When he became stuck in the busway lane, Franky admitted to the police that he panicked as the mob crowded his car, leading to his failed escape attempt.

“Because of overwhelming fear, when he was in the busway lane he turned a hard left, hitting the [TransJakarta bus] and the lane separator, which his car got stuck on top of,” Taman Sari Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head Rango Siregar told CNN Indonesia yesterday.

Luckily for Franky, the police got to him before the enraged crowd could seriously hurt him, as often happens in cases of mob justice in Indonesia. The pedestrian Franky hit with his car reportedly suffered minor injuries, and there were no injuries sustained by members of the mob during the crazy chase seen in the video.

Rango said Franky tested positive for meth in a urine test conducted immediately after his arrest and that officers found drug paraphernalia, illegal male enhancement pills and antidepressants, inside his car.

The police have yet to announce what charges Franky will face.
