Inspired or lazy? This Bekasi stadium logo is almost identical to this one for a US baseball team

Lately, Indonesians on social media have been wondering which of these two copied the other:

One is the logo for the Marlis Park stadium, the home of US baseball team the Miami Marlins, while the other is the logo for Bekasi’s new Wibawa Mukti football stadium. It’s pretty obvious from just a glance that one graphic designer was heavily influenced by the other’s design, and by that we mean they were probably too lazy to come up with their own and just copied an existing logo and added a few minor tweaks.

The discussion on which one came first has gone pretty viral, with even Males Banget picking up on the issue, although nobody has actually given their answer yet.

Well, after some research, we dare to say that all the evidence suggests that Wibawa Mukti copied Marlins Park’s logo.

First, Marlins Park was inaugurated in 2012, whereas Wibawa Mukti was inaugurated in 2015. Granted, the logos may not necessarily be as old as their respective stadiums, but in this case they are.

A quick Google Images search shows that the Marlins Park logo existed prior to 2012. Meanwhile, the same can’t be said for Wibawa Mukti’s logo, and the stadium’s official Facebook page only uploaded its logo as its profile picture in January of this year.

And to top it all off, the logo clearly features a retractable dome roof on the stadium, which is something that Marlins Park has and – you guessed it – Wibawa Mukti doesn’t.

So we think it’s safe to say the logo designer for Wibawa Mukti straight up copied Marlins Park’s logo and added a bit of colour to it, a job which, frankly speaking, could have been accomplished with MS Paint.

But hey, this isn’t the first time that Indonesian graphic designers got lazy – check out these Indonesian movie posters that are almost identical to Hollywood ones. But to be fair, they are the exceptions as there are plenty of super talented Indonesian graphic designers out there.
