Nurdin, a 27-year-old inmate at the Sukmajaya Police Department in Cilodong, Depok, died last Friday after receiving several wounds on his body and his head.
Nurdin, who admitted to previously stealing Rp 65 million, was told by the police to lead them to the stolen money he said he had hidden at a gas station in Cilodong.
Police claim Nurdin tried to flee as they were escorting him to the gas station on Friday.
“[Nurdin] fled when he was handcuffed. He fell and tumbled down. His head hit a hard object,” said Depok Police Chief Ahmad Subarkah, retelling Sukmajaya Police Chief Agus Widodo’s account of what happened, as quoted by Vivanews today.
The police didn’t reveal exactly how far Nurdin tumbled down or exactly what it was that his head collided with on the way down. The incident is still under police investigation.
Nurdin allegedly died as he was being treated at Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta. His body is currently still at the hospital for an autopsy.
It wasn’t revealed if Nurdin had shown the stash of money to the police before he fell.
