Indonesia’s two richest men are still two cigarette tycoon brothers worth Rp 200 trillion

Budi Hartono

Forbes Magazine just released their annual list of the richest people in Indonesia. The two owners of the Djarum Group, brothers Budi and Michael Hartono, retained the top two spots on that list as the richest people in the country.

According to the Forbes report, the brothers Hartono have a collective net worth of US $16 billion or around Rp 200 trillion.

Their main sources of income are from the Djarum cigarette business and the banking sector.

“The brothers experienced an increase in wealth of US $1 billion, mainly because of the increase in PT Bank Central Asia’s (BCA) stock prices,” the report said.

BCA’s stock prices shot up 50% over the past year.

And it seems the rich stay rich because they’re selective in who they mingle with. Recently, Budi Hartono’s son Victor married a woman named Amelia, who is the daughter of the long time right-hand man of Anthoni Salim, the third richest man in Indonesia.

We can’t even begin to imagine their collective wealth and power.
