Indonesia’s sixth president and current chairman of the Democratic Party, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), has confirmed the tragic news that his wife, former first lady Ani Yudhoyono, has been diagnosed with blood cancer. Ani has been hospitalized at the National University Hospital of Singapore since February 2.

“With sadness, I would like to convey this to our friends in Indonesia, Ibu Ani is suffering from blood cancer. She has to undergo intensive medical treatments,” SBY said in an Instagram video.

SBY also apologized for not being able to attend numerous invitations, which he had agreed to prior to Ani’s medical treatment. He said his wife is a strong and tough person and has overcome many difficulties in her life.

“However, Ibu Ani, myself, and our family must unite in the spirit of faith and strength. Hopefully, with God’s help, Ibu Ani’s medical treatment will go through smoothly,” SBY said.

In the video, SBY thanked everyone who sent their wishes and prayers, directly or through social media, and asked for prayers for Ibu Ani’s recovery.

Democratic Party Vice Secretary General Andi Arief said on Twitter that President Joko Widodo has ordered presidential doctors to cooperate with doctors in Singapore in any way they can to ensure Ani’s recovery.

Ani Yudhoyono, born Kristiani Herrawati on July 6, 1952 in Yogyakarta, is the third child of Liutenant General Sarwo Edhie Wibowo and Hj. Sunarti Sri Hadiyah. She married SBY on July 39, 1976, and they have two children: Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (a losing candidate in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election) and Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono. Ani graduated with bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1998 from the Indonesia Open University. She received a Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipradana medal in 2011 and a rare Papuan butterfly species, the Delias kristianiae, was named after her in 2007.
