A woman in the Riau Islands Province capital of Tanjungpinang became a victim of sextortion, police said, after a man who bought her phone obtained her sex tape saved on the device.

The victim, who’s identified by her initials PW, told the police that the man threatened to spread her sex tape to social media.

Awal Sya’ban Harahap, who heads Tanjungpinang Police’s Crime Investigation Unit, explained that the police carried out an investigation based on the victim’s report, from which they arrested the suspect, a man identified by his initials DR, at his home in the city yesterday.

Awal said that PW admitted that she was the woman in the sex tape, which she filmed together with her ex-husband when they were still together.

“The victim then sold her phone. She forgot to erase that video,” Awal said today.

The video was obtained by the suspect last week, who then sent it to the victim’s Instagram using a burner account. According to Awal, DR had also spread the video through Whatsapp.

The suspect demanded IDR4 million (US$279.6) from PW, and threatened to spread her sex tape online if she did not comply. PW then reported him to the police shortly after receiving the threat, leading to his arrest.

DR has confessed his crimes to the police. The suspect, who may face charges related to extortion, is still in custody and under investigation by authorities.
