An Indonesian woman, identified by her initials ES, was doused with gasoline and set on fire by her husband in Kuwait, where they reside, officials say.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Kuwait City, on Oct. 2, ES’ husband, who they identified as a Bedoon (a term referring to stateless Arab minority in Kuwait), assaulted ES after the pair had a loud disagreement.

Citing local police investigation, the Embassy said the husband was under the influence of illegal narcotics when he set ES on fire. He then put out the fire on ES with a blanket and took her to a hospital.

“When we met her [at the hospital], ES was in a stable condition after suffering second-degree burns on 30% of her body,” Indonesian Ambassador to Kuwait Tri Tharyat said in a statement released yesterday, as picked up by Tribun.

It’s not yet clear what charges the husband may face following his arrest.

The Embassy said that they will continue giving assistance to ES while she’s being treated and ensure that her legal rights are met. Officials also say ES’ family in Indonesia has been made aware of the incident and will continue to be notified of any updates.
