A 15-year-old boy in South Sumatra may be looking at lengthy prison time after police said that he killed his older brother following a quarrel over instant noodles.

In the early hours of Saturday, Musi Banyuasin resident AL came home with a pack of instant noodles he had just bought from a nearby shop. His 27-year-old brother, Rivan, was upset that AL did not buy a pack for him for their suhoor (pre-fast meal in Ramadan).

According to the police, Rivan slapped AL and squeezed his cheeks in anger.

“The culprit was slicing onions and vegetables to cook with the noodles [when the victim slapped him], and [he] used the knife to stab the victim,” Lalan Precinct Chief Hasurungan Hutajulu said yesterday.

AL and other family members then rushed Rivan to a nearby clinic, where the older brother was declared to have died from the fatal wound.

Police have charged AL with murder under the Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. The teenager may receive a lighter sentence on account of being a minor.
