An Indonesian soldier had the audacity to borrow money from his mother-in-law so he could pay the hitmen he hired to kill her daughter, police said, as he intended to run away with his mistress. In a fresh twist, police today said they believe the soldier has died after several days on the run.

On July 18, Second Corporal M hired four men to kill his wife, RW, and promised them IDR200 million (US$13,373) if they accomplished the mission or IDR120 million (US$8,024) just for a mere attempt.

Security camera footage taken outside M and RW’s home in Semarang, Central Java showed RW riding her motorbike home after picking up their daughter, who is in primary school. As soon as she got down from the vehicle, two men on a motorcycle drove by and fired four rounds at RW, which, thankfully, were not fatal.

RW was taken to hospital, where she is still being treated for her wounds to this day. Meanwhile, police arrested the two men on the motorcycle, as well as two other M had hired, who acted as lookouts during the failed hit.

Before the arrest, the hitmen received IDR120 million as promised by M. A witness, who is a helper for M, told the police where the money came from.

“[The witness] received a phone call from M, who asked him to get money from the victim’s mother, or M’s mother-in-law, to cover RW’s medical bills. The instruction was that the IDR120 million be delivered to the hospital,” Semarang Police Chief Irwan Anwar said yesterday.

After receiving the money, M then told the witness to grab an additional IDR90 million (US$6,018) from his mother-in-law, claiming that RW’s medical bills had ballooned. Police say M took the money and likely used it to fund his life on the lam.

M had been a fugitive for over a week when news broke this morning that he committed suicide by drinking poison at his parents’ home in Kendal, Central Java.

One of the hitmen told the police that M was livid that they failed to kill his wife. Nevertheless, M still gave them the IDR120 million, under the condition that they make another attempt at RW’s life and told them to shoot her in the head. Police managed to arrest the hitmen before they could make the second attempt.

The hitmen have been charged with premeditated murder attempt, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
