Double standards in the enforcement of Indonesia’s anti-pornography law, you say?

An Indonesian politician may be afforded the privilege of zero repercussions over the leak of her pornographic content after police said that they would respect her privacy.

A self-shot video allegedly taken by a Musi Banyuasin Regional Council member identified by her initials DHL has gone viral online. In the short clip, the woman from the South Sumatra regency can be seen stripping naked as she looks at the camera.

As is the case with porn cases, police have swiftly gotten involved — but not in the way one would expect given their track record in jailing adult content creators.

“The authenticity [of the video] has not been confirmed,” Musi Banyuasin Police Chief Siswandi said today.

“Don’t jump to conclusions. Even if it’s true [that the video is DHL’s], this falls under her privacy. We must be careful with information in the lead up to election year.”

The people behind Kebaya Merah” would be seething in their jail cells if they heard that statement.

In November, police arrested a pair of adult content creators — a woman who goes by the initials AH and a man who goes by the initials ACS — after their sex tape, which they sold online, leaked and went hugely viral in Indonesia. The sex tape became known as “Kebaya Merah” in reference to AH’s traditional clothing in the video.

Their arrest was the latest high-profile illustration of law enforcement’s relentlessness in pursuing and prosecuting people behind sex scandals in Indonesia (with a zeal they rarely seem to apply to other types of investigations). By “people,” we mean ordinary people.

DHL wouldn’t be the first politician who is afforded the privilege. In 2018, footage circulated purportedly showing an Indonesian lawmaker having a threesome with two women. Investigation into the case ceased after his party, Gerindra, stressed that the video was a part of a smear campaign.

At any rate, DHL may still have to face the Musi Banyuasin Regional Council’s ethics committee over allegations related to the video.
