Recently, an extremely disturbing video went viral, showing a young man tossing a live puppy into a crocodile-infested river in Indonesia. In a matter of seconds, the poor pup was devoured by a croc, much to the jubilation and cheers of the tosser (we mean this both literally and as a British insult) and his friends who were not seen in the video.

(You can watch the video here. Caution is advised)

Yeah, we’re absolutely with you. Screw this animal-abusing asshole and his asshole friends.

The location has been identified as a river in Belinyu, Bangka Belitung Province. After the video went viral, local police said they were investigating the case but have yet to identify the puppy tosser, nor have they determined when the video actually took place.

The police have cordoned off the area with a police line to prevent people from going near the crocodile-infested river.

“We have issued a warning so that there are no more victims,” Belinyu Police Chief Iman Teguh told Detik today.

Local animal welfare group Animal Lovers Bangka Island (Alobi) heavily criticized the senseless act of animal abuse shown in the video.

“The young man who tossed the dog only wanted to have fun with his friends by seeing the reptilian beast,” said Alobi head Langka Sani, as quoted by Detik.

Langka said that Alobi has gone down to the river with the local Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and found that it contained large crocodiles that tend to go up to the surface of the water. They have warned locals not to go near the river, let alone toss innocent animals into it, for their safety.

Under Indonesia’s KUHP criminal code, animal abuse is punishable by up to three months in prison, as well as a paltry fine of IDR4,500 (US$0.33), which would have been plenty in the Dutch colonial era (when the KUHP was originally drawn up) but that would barely buy you a bottle of water these days. Activists have long called for tougher punishments for animal abuse in the country.
