The helmet is an essential piece of safety equipment for motorcyclists, but it can also save people’s lives in other unexpected ways, like by preventing their heads from being split open by an axe-wielding maniac.
Daniel Saragih, a 28-year-old university student in the Indonesian city of Pekanbaru, was driving home on his motorcycle on Tuesday afternoon when he was randomly stopped by a car.
“According to the victim, the suspects were driving a black (Toyota) Avanza. They stopped the victim, took out a machete and an axe, and attacked the victim,” said Pekanbaru Police Spokesman Dodi Vivino, as quoted by Kumparan yesterday.
The attackers did not use the machete against Daniel, but one of them did swing the axe towards Daniel’s head. Luckily, Daniel was wearing his motorcycle helmet at the time, which stopped the axe before it could make contact with his cranium.
The axe did remain lodged in the helmet as shown in the picture above, which shows just how close Daniel came to what could very likely have been a fatal injury.
Despite reportedly did not suffer any physical injuries, but was taken to a hospital after the incident as he’s suffering from psychological trauma. His attackers also stole his bag, which contained a hard disk, a camera, a tablet, and Rp 1 million in cash, leading the police to believe that this was a random robbery carried out on the street.
The Pekanbaru Police are still hunting down Daniel’s attackers.
