We have, unfortunately, seen quite a few stories about both teachers abusing students and students attacking teachers, all of which seems to be indicative of a larger culture of violence within Indonesian schools (another example being the large scale and sometimes deadly tawuran brawls that take place between gangs from different schools).

Another video of a teacher brutally hitting a student in front of their class recently went viral on social media, this one showing a junior high teacher using her shoe as a weapon.

According to the original caption on the video, the incident allegedly took place at the Magetan 2 Junior High School in Magetan, East Java. The school’s principal, Nursalim, confirmed the incident took place at his school on Tuesday.

Nursalim said that the teacher, identified by her initials LS, has been sanctioned but noted that she had a history of similar behavior.

“I have warned her, I am also concerned about the way LS acts. Actually, it has been repeated over and over, I warned the teachers to not get angered easily. They must be able to control their emotions,” Nursalim said as quoted by Tribun.

One student from the class, Hafid, said that the beating had allegedly taken place after LS heard the victim, identified as R, singing the azan (call to prayer) loudly from the next room. When he finished singing, LS suddenly took off her shoe in apparent anger.

“The next thing I knew, the shoe was in Ibu LS’s right hand she hit R in the abdomen, then the face and then the head. When the incident happened, some of my friends were videotaping it,” Hafid said.

However, Hafid said he did not know who uploaded it to social media and claimed to be unaware that it had gone viral.

The Head of Magetan District’s Youth and Sports Education Agency (Dindikpora), Djoko Susilo, said that the incident had not yet been reported to his agency but said that they would investigate the matter.

In April, a teacher in Purwokerto, Central Java, identified by his initials LK, became a criminal suspect for child abuse after a video of him slapping one of his students hard went viral. His trial is still pending but if found guilty he could face up to five years in jail.
