An Indonesian domestic worker who worked in Malaysia was found dead on Saturday at her employers’ home in George Town, Penang, prompting a murder investigation.

According to The Star Online, the employers, a couple in their 40s, initially said they found their 38-year-old domestic worker unconscious around 11 hours after she had slipped and collapsed on the staircase in their home. She was pronounced dead after the couple called for an ambulance.

However, post-mortem examination results later revealed that the domestic worker died due to blunt force trauma to the chest. The couple was arrested yesterday while a murder investigation is underway.

Sources say that there were also injuries to the woman’s private parts, but George Town Police denied that she was sexually abused.

The woman had been employed as a domestic worker in Malaysia for two years.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi confirmed that the victim was an Indonesian national.

There have been many horrific cases of abuse against Indonesian domestic workers employed overseas. Perhaps the most shocking case in the region in recent years is the torture and murder of two Indonesian women at the hands of a British banker in Hong Kong.
