Indonesia has third highest road fatality rate in Asia in 2015: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just released The Global Status Report on Road Safety in 2015, which tallies up the number of road fatalities last year in 180 countries.

With news reported daily about road deaths in Indonesia, it’s no surprise that Indonesia would rank among the countries with the highest road fatality rate. In fact, Indonesia came third in Asia, just behind China and India, with 38,279 road deaths in 2015.

Statistically speaking, road fatalities in Indonesia were way below China (261,367) and India (207,551). Even when the data is adjusted percentage-wise, Indonesia, with its road deaths making up 0.015% of its total population, is still below China’s 0.018% and India’s 0.017%.

That said, 38,279 road deaths are still too many and many of them could’ve been prevented if Indonesia had stronger enforcement of road safety laws. In fact, the report stated that Indonesia, along with Pakistan, Bangladesh, USA, and Nigeria do not meet any of WHO’s standards for road safety best practice legislation on issues such as seatbelts, speed and motorcycle helmets.
