Indonesia Consumers Foundation calls on GBK stadium to stamp out “preman” parking attendants

There aren’t many sports facilities in Jakarta as complete and varied as the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium’s complex. But anyone who’s ever exercised there has probably paid more for parking than they should have.

This was recently brought up by the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI), who called on GBK’s management to stamp out organized thugs, locally known as preman, who work in the complex and charge visitors for parking fees on top of GBK’s official Rp 5,000 per hour rate.

“These preman indirectly force people [to pay them additional parking fees]. If the consumer refuses then their cars may experience problems. Like it or not, consumers have to pay Rp 10,000 to premans [for parking],” said YLKI head Tulus Abadi, as quoted by Warta Kota today.

Tulus suspects that the preman thugs may have strong backing in order to be able to carry out their extortion methods.

“What’s the use of all the police posts in GBK? Is there a collaboration between the preman thugs and the GBK management and the police?” he said.

YLKI is reminding GBK’s management and the police that GBK will play host to many sporting events during next year’s Asian Games, which is co-hosted by Jakarta and Palembang. For that reason, YLKI wants preman parking attendants gone from GBK as soon as possible.

“Don’t let it get to the point that foreign athletes are also coerced for parking money,” Tulus said.
