Idul Adha long weekend mudik exodus to peak Friday afternoon: police

Though the upcoming Idul Adha long weekend isn’t going to be as long as the Idul Fitri holiday in July, many people are still expected to leave Jakarta for a mini-mudik (hometown excursion) during the days off.

The Jakarta Metro Police are predicting that the number of travellers leaving Jakarta is going to peak tomorrow.

“We predict that the peak of mudik travellers who are leaving town will occur Friday afternoon. By the evening many people would’ve left [Jakarta],” said Jakarta Metro Police Chief Inspector General Moechgiyarto, as quoted by Okezone today.

As such, Moechgiyarto said a 3,500-strong team of police officers, firefighters, and transportation department officers will be deployed to monitor mudik goers on Jakarta’s exit points during predicted peak times tomorrow.

Though the police couldn’t give a rough estimate as to how many people would be leaving Jakarta over Idul Adha, Moechgiyarto believes that they would represent a significant portion of Jakartans as the upcoming Idul Adha falls quite early in the month – a time when people had just gotten paid. This means that anyone staying behind in Jakarta during the long weekend should be able to enjoy the city without the usual traffic congestions.

This year’s Idul Adha falls on Monday, September 12, which has been designated as a national holiday.
