Hypermarket chain Carrefour claims their Granny Smith and Gala apples are safe for consumption

Granny Smith apples

Even after the government issued a warning against the consumption of US-grown Granny Smith and Gala apples for fear of listeria infection, hypermarket chain Carrefour clarified that their Granny Smith and Gala apples are free from the bacteria.

Through a written statement issued by Carrefour management, the hypermarket chain claims their apples were imported from Domex Super Fresh and Oneonta Trading in Washington State, USA. The listeria-infested apples supposedly were supplied by the Bidart Bros from Bakersfield, California, USA.

“This happened because an American supplier, the Bidart Bros from Bakersfield California, recalled their Gala and Granny Smith apples because they were indicated to have been contaminated with the listeria bacteria,” the statement read, as picked up by Warta Kota

“But the apples sold in Carrefour since December 2014 came from suppliers from a different region, namely Domex Superfresh and Oneonta Trading from Washington (State). As such, we do not have to worry about the listeria problem.”

As the saying goes, “one bad apple spoils the whole bunch.” Well, that could be applied quite literally in this case.
