An unbelievably tragic series of events played out this Sunday, when a man, identified as 27-year-old GRK, leapt into the Kali Perancis river in Dadap, Tangerang, in an attempt to save his wife, 22 year-old B, who had jumped into the river in an apparent suicide attempt.
“From the information we received, the two were having domestic problems. The wife then attempted suicide [by jumping off a bridge], but was seen by her husband, who then plunged after her to save his wife,” said Tangerang Police Chief Commissioner Teluk Naga Supriyanto told Kompas today.
According to the police report, GRK and B had a fight causing B to leave their home on Sunday afternoon.
When B left, GRK followed silently from behind and then saw B jump into the Kali Perancis river from a bridge near Grand Mall Dadap. GRK followed her into the waters and, despite attempts by witnesses to help them, both were swept away.
Police search and rescue teams searched the river for both of them from Sunday until this morning. GRK’s body was recovered about 500 meters from where he jumped into the river. B’s body has still not been found.
