The West Jakarta Police today revealed a new kind of ATM scam that, admittedly, is rather ingenious.
Putu Putera Sadana, head of the West Jakarta Police Crime Investigation Unit, said the scam involved two people.
One would jam a matchstick into an ATM card slot. When a victim comes and struggles to insert the card into the slot, the scammer would come over and offer his help.
“[This is when] one of the scammers offers his help [to the victim]. The victim would then hand over their ATM card to the scammer,” Putu said, as quoted by Vivanews today.
The other scammer would then come in and drop some Rp 50k bank notes to distract the victim.
“That’s when [the first scammer] switches the victim’s ATM card with a fake. The victim would then try again and put the card into the ATM. When they enter the PIN number, it wouldn’t work because the card has been switched,” Putu said.
One of the scammers would take note of the PIN number the victim attempted to put in. They’d then walk away with the real ATM card and withdraw the money elsewhere using the PIN number.
Luckily, police have arrested the two scammers as they tried to pull off their scam at a supermarket in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.
The scammers admitted that they have withdrawn over Rp 50 million from stolen ATM cards.
