Several photos have emerged online (such as in this thread in Kaskus) showing members of girl group JKT48 just having fun on a night out. The problem is, they’re shown to be getting too up close and personal with some boys, boys who are probably their boyfriends.
So ‘scandalous’, in fact, that we had to censor… nothing
What’s the big deal, you ask? Well it seems these J-pop wannabes signed away most of their human rights for their shot at fame – including the freedom to date.
You see, every member of JKT48, and all of the other derivative girl groups from the ’48 Family’ from around the world, must swear to observe the “7 Golden Rules” regarding their daily conduct for as long as they are part of the family. It all sounds cult-y, but these girls have to uphold their cute-sy innocent images, even at the expense of their normal lives.
From a JKT48 fan blog (yep, they exist), the 7 Golden Rules state that the girls are prohibited to drink and smoke, go to nightclubs, and wear skimpy outfits, among others. But one rule caught our attention for being downright cruel: members of the 48 Family are not allowed to have boyfriends.

That photo will make it very hard for JKT48ian Jessica Vania (Jeje) to dodge accusations that she is dating someone. Not only has she apparently broken a golden rule, Jeje and her boyfriend looks like they have been going out for at least 17 months, according to the above photo’s description (aww cute, they celebrate monthly anniversaries).
It seems the 48 Family prohibits dating because every member is supposed to “belong” to the fans, in that they have to spread their love to their loyal fans (mostly prepubescent boys) equally instead of just to select individuals. We think the 48 Family is run by fascists.
We’d also be worried if we were Jeje or any of the girls caught up in this ‘scandal’. Just look at what happened to one girl from the Japanese chapter of the 48 Family when she was caught dating a boy:
Jeje and the other girls might be subject to similar torture if she wants to stay on with JKT48. We think they should take this opportunity to grow up and leave the group, which has offended our ears for quite some time.
