They say no good deed goes unpunished. And so it seems to have been the case in Tanah Abang last night. A hotel security guard tried to stop a gang of criminals from robbing and attacking a truck driver on Jalan Wahid Hasyim died after the criminals attacked him instead.
Police say the incident took place in front of 30-year-old security guard Edi Firmansyah’s place of work, the Fave Hotel located in Tanah Abang’s Kampung Bali neighborhood. At around 3am, Edi saw dozens of men – who witnesses allege were from Flores – beating a truck driver in an attempt to steal his money.
Edi bravely attempted to stop the attack, which caused the thugs to turn their attention to him. Two of his fellow guards ran back into the hotel, but the criminals hit him in the head with a rock, causing him to collapse. After that, they continued to attack him. They also caused damage to the hotel and one of its cars.
Police finally arrived on the scene and the criminals fled except for one who was injured that they left behind. Edi was rushed to Tarakan Hospital but his injuries were too great.
“Before he arrived at the hospital, the victim was already dead. The case is still being investigated, members have secured the scene and are examining witnesses and evidence such as knives and stones and the Avanza car belonging to the hotel,” Tanah Abang Police Commissioner Mustaqim told Tribunnews.
The truck driver that the gang initially targeted is still alive, perhaps due to Edi’s heroic actions.
