While the New Year’s floods in the Greater Jakarta Area claimed dozens of human lives and displaced thousands more, many animals were also affected by the great disaster.

One of the most harrowing images to come out of the floods is that of the dead horse above, which reportedly drowned while trying to wade through flood water in North Serpong, South Tangerang yesterday evening.

According to a report by Kompas, the horse was one of three utilized to transport residents on Jalan Kayu Gede, which was off-limits to motorized vehicles due to the flood yesterday. Unlike the other two horses, the horse above was made to draw a carriage by its owner, who was described as an elderly man.

At around 6pm yesterday, after a day of toiling on the flooded street, the owner fainted and his horse collapsed and died. The owner was taken to a community clinic, where there has been no update on his condition as of today, while the horse’s body was evacuated from the area this morning after the flood water had subsided and a truck was able to get near it.

It’s highly likely that the horse was not the only animal to perish in the floods, considering that critter casualties are likely to go unreported. At the same time, there have been numerous heartwarming tales of animal survival, such as the rescue of a pet dog, a rat floating on a sandal, and cockroaches crawling to higher ground.
