High school installs CCTV cameras in student bathrooms, principal thought it was fine because “nobody complained”

Eric Cartman once famously said that “toilet time is the last bastion of American freedom”. We totally get where he’s coming from, since everybody should obviously have the right to total privacy while they poo.

But one high school in Cipinang, East Jakarta, shat all over that right.

SMA Negeri 100 has caused a shitstorm of controversy recently after its students created a petition to get the school to remove CCTV cameras that were installed in student bathrooms.

We know what you’re thinking – why on earth would somebody put CCTV cameras in student bathrooms, let alone any bathroom?

School principal Mukim Jauhari said the school installed CCTV cameras in bathrooms to catch students smoking.

He also said, in an illogical way, that he didn’t think the students were bothered by the CCTV cameras because nobody complained to him.

“We never received a complaint from students about the CCTV cameras. We never even got a complaint in the suggestions box,” he said, as quoted by Okezone today.

Right. So maybe somebody should go ahead and install CCTV cameras in his bathroom at home and then only take them down when he complains. Let’s see how he likes that.

In any case, the CCTV cameras have been moved so that they are now monitoring the entrances to the bathrooms. That’s a far more sensible solution they should’ve thought of in the beginning, before they got themselves into this embarrassing mess.
