As you are hopefully aware, Jakarta and Palembang will be hosting the prestigious Asian Games in 2018 (assuming the government can get its act together in time). On top of the numerous logistical challenges facing the organizers of the massive sporting event, they also faced a creative one when the Sports Ministry’s original design for the Games’ mascot, Drawa, which was supposed to be an exotic-looking bird of paradise but was mocked by netizens for looking more like a chicken (you can see the original Drawa above on the left).
After the criticism, the Sports Ministry decided to take Drawa back to the drawing board and promised a new design sometime in the next few months.
But rather than waiting to see what the ministry would come up with, local creative network Kreavi decided to hold a contest open to all of Indonesia’s hyper-talented designers to seeif they could dramatically reimagine Drawa and free him from his chicken form.
After sifting through hundreds of submissions, Kreavi’s judging panel of design experts have narrowed their list down to their top ten picks and are letting the public vote on their favorite until Feb 11.
Although the contest is, quite unfortunately we think, not affiliated with the Sports Ministry and will not necessarily have any influence on the new design for Drawa, we hope that they will at least take some of the ideas that the incredible artists that entered Kreavi’s contest have applied to Drawa so that they can come up with a mascot that all Indonesians can be proud of (or at least find less embarrassing).
Here are a few of our favorite designs. You can head to Kreavi’s voting site to see them all and pick your favorite.
