Hello Kitty: Masking crime with innocence
Slamet Sainan (51) is not your ordinary driver. Nor is he the most honest – he is part of a syndicate of car thieves after all.
Slamet fooled Djuwita Suhardjo (44), a Tambora, West Jakarta citizen, to hire him as a personal driver. Two days into the job, Slamet stole Djuwita’s white Nissan Evalia on February 16.
Slamet disguised the car to avoid arrest by the police, including changing the plate number.
“The actual plate number is B 3 QD, which was changed by the suspect. And then, the suspect changed the car’s appearance by sticking on Hello Kitty stickers to fool authorities,” said Kus Subiantoro, head of the Penjaringan Police Dept, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.
We totally get Slamet’s strategy; you wouldn’t suspect a car with Hello Kitty stickers to be driven by a criminal. But somehow the police saw through the disguise and Slamet was arrested on February 19.
It turned out that Slamet was a repeat car thief offender, and was actually part of a larger syndicate of car thieves. Through Slamet, the police managed to recover 27 stolen motorcycles and three stolen cars so far, though no further arrests have been made.
