Rodrigo Gularte is due to be executed tomorrow
The lawyer for Rodrigo Gularte, a Brazilian citizen currently on Nusakambangan Island awaiting execution tomorrow, told the Tangerang District Court this morning about a sad exchange he had with his client that showed Gularte’s mental state.
His lawyer, Alex Argo Hernowo, told Gularte that he could make three requests to the state prosecutor at Nusakambangan. However, Alex said Gularte could not understand what he meant.
“When asked [what his 3 requests were], Rodrigo got confused. He told me actually I am Aladdin and I’d been given three wishes. That shows, he does not understand he’s going to be executed,” Alex told the Tangerang District Court today, as quoted by Kompas.
Alex told the court that Gularte has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and psychotic bipolar disorder at Cilacap General Hospital, a diagnosis consist with those given to Gularte in Brazil, long before he was caught in Indonesia with 19 kilograms of heroin in 2004.
Alex said that, according to Article 44 of Indonesia’s Penal Code, defendants with mental disorders can not be executed.
However, Indonesia’s Attorney General has argued that Gularte is fit to be executed, as proven by testimony from Gularte’s fellow inmates and a second opinion from two police doctors (the second opinion has not been made available to Gularte’s legal team or his family).
