Recently, a video showing an attack on random motorcyclists by a gang of thugs in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, went viral. In the video, the thugs appear to be wielding sharp weapons as they attack unsuspecting motorcyclists on a quiet road in the middle of the night.

The video prompted a police investigation and three of the alleged culprits were arrested on Saturday. What is perhaps more troubling than their random attacks on innocent civilians is their motive (or lack thereof) for doing so.
“They [don’t attack people] to rob them or take their belongings, but they just want to hurt people,” said Budi Hermanot, head of South Jakarta’s Crime Investigation Unit, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.
Budi added that none of their victims have had their belongings stolen. Based on the suspects’ testimonies, the gang, which consist of 20-year-olds, are often challenged to commit random acts of violence by their leader after they get drunk.
The police confirmed the authenticity of the video, but said that specific attack happened two months ago.
The police did not make clear how many have fallen victim to this gang’s brutal attacks. It’s also not yet known how many gang members remain uncaptured, but the police have pledged that they will hunt them all down.
