Grandfather uses Facebook to help track down his grandson’s killer

After his grandson was killed and police were unable to find any leads in the case, 64-year-old Sadeli decided to investigate the murder himself, immersing himself in the world of Facebook to find the killer.

Sadeli’s grandson, 15-year-old Sugarna Ahmad was found murdered on the edge of the railway track along Jalan Manggarai Selatan in Tebet, South Jakarta, on June 6.

Now, thanks to Sadeli’s investigation, police finally have a strong lead in the case of Sugarna’s murder.

Sugarna had worked as a minibus driver, often working out of Senen Terminal. Sadeli went to the terminal and went around questioning Sugarna’s friends and acquaintances about his grandson.

Eventually he found out that Sugarna had been in a relationship with a female musician, who was also involved with another male musician.

“That’s how I know that the motive [for the murder] was romance,” Sadeli told Warta Kota from his house in Jalan Kalilio in Senen, Central Jakarta. He also believed that the boyfriend of the female singer had to have been the one that killed Sugarna.

To find the boyfriend and his location, Sadeli delved into the world of social media (with the help of his granddaughter). Eventually he found photos of the young man he believed had killed Sugarna on while reading the posts on a Facebook community for buskers in Jakarta. He then submitted the evidence and photos to the police.

But the police were still unable to find the suspected killer. So Sadeli went around to the musicians he knew in Senen Terminal and asked them to ask for help from musicians throughout Central and South Jakarta.

Their efforts eventually paid off. Last Sunday, the musicians managed to find a witness who saw the murder of Sugarna. That person said he knew who the killer was and that he was still wandering around singing on the streets of Jakarta.

“My messenger conversation with the witness was recorded secretly. That evidence was then submitted to the police. It included the name of the man who killed my grandchild,” Sadeli said.

Tebet Police Assistant Commissioner Mudiran, confirmed Sadeli’s story..

“Yes, indeed his grandfather [Sadeli] handed over the recorded evidence of a witness who saw the murder. The name of the suspect is also mentioned. We will act on this as soon as possible,” Mudiran told Warta Kota said last night.

After all he has  been through, we hope that police can find Sugarna’s killer so that Sadeli can finally find the justice he has worked so hard to find.
