Indonesia is set to introduce the loosest set of restrictions in terms of domestic travel requirements after removing COVID-19 testing requirements, a senior minister has confirmed.

In his weekly briefing on national COVID-19 matters, Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said fully-vaccinated domestic travelers do not need to present negative PCR or antigen test results prior to departure.

“[This applies to] domestic travelers on land, sea, and air transportation,” Luhut said.

Two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are required for one to qualify as fully-vaccinated, he added.

The relaxed rules have come into effect with the issuance of a COVID-19 Task Force circular on March 8, 2022.

The government is easing restrictions across the board amid dwindling COVID-19 numbers nationwide. The Greater Jakarta Area, which has been under Level 3 of the four-tiered Enforcement of Restrictions on Public Activities (PPKM) protocol throughout the Omicron outbreak, has been downgraded to Level 2 as the number of cases and hospitalizations decrease.

It is worth noting, however, that Indonesia’s official mortality rate from COVID-19 has been quite alarming in recent weeks, hovering around 200 and 300 deaths per day.
