Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan went on a random inspection across several restaurants in South Jakarta’s hip neighborhoods of Kemang and Senopati on Saturday, saying that he observed varied levels of COVID-19 health protocols compliance for diners in the capital.
Donning the uniform of the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), Anies made the unannounced visit along with Arifin, who heads the agency in Jakarta.

Anies was seen speaking — or scolding, rather — patrons who didn’t have their face masks on, as well as talking to a number of the restaurant employees. As written on his Instagram post, Anies said several premises complied with the health protocols while others were caught making consecutive violations, adding that Satpol PP will continue to inspect compliance of health protocols.

“Jakarta already has regulations regarding protocols and their sanctions since the month of May. Until now, we have collected fines for violations up to IDR2.75 billion (around US$187,152). This is not about the government imposing sanctions in order to collect fines, this is about safety, protection for all of us,” Anies wrote.
“Heavier progressive fines will be imposed for repeated violations, including closure of business premises.”
Jakarta has been in the transitional phase of the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) protocol since early June, which have since seen many restaurants in the capital open at half capacity. Several policies in place include temperature check and using hand sanitizers upon entering the premises, as well as obligatory face masks for all patrons.
As of yesterday, Jakarta leads the national tally with 25,714 confirmed COVID-19 cases, which include 939 deaths and 16,268 recoveries.
