Governor Ahok promises to punish polluting factories in Cengkareng

Pretty much all of Jakarta’s rivers are horribly polluted with garbage and toxic chemicals. But there are actually laws against both individuals and companies dumping waste into our waters. They just need to be enforced.

Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said that he’s gotten numerous reports from citizens about factories polluting the waters in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. Ahok said the government would inspect these factories and if they were found to be dumping into the rivers they would be sanctioned severely, possibly with criminal charges.

“The sanctions are heavy. They could be convicted or bankrupted,” Ahok told Merdeka today.

Ahok said factories often got away with dumping into rivers because they simply bribed the officials that were supposed to be monitoring them. He said once clean officials were put in place, factories would be forced to process their waste responsibly.
