With Jakarta’s traffic pressure building, our 2018 Asian Games hosting duties coming up soon and the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRT) still far from completion,  Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama is looking to get another new public transportation system in place as soon as possible – namely an LRT, or Light Rail Transit system.

Governor Ahok recently invited five property companies in the capital to work on the project, which has seven planned routes.

Ahok said the developers interested in building LRT are Sedayu Group, Podomoro, Intiland, Lippo Group, JI Expo, Panin Group and Summarecon.

“In three years we want to have it built. We will ask them to submit documents on January 30 regarding their proposals. We will calculate the costs again then, ” Ahok said as quoted by Poskota News.

Of the seven planned LRT route corridors, the first two to be built would go from Kelapa Gading to Kebayoran Lama and from Soekarno Hatta to PRJ Kemayoran.

“Those two are the ones we want to implement in time for the the 2018 Asian Games,” Ahok said.

Ahok said the development of the LRT should also help unravel traffic congestion in Jakarta.
