Governor Ahok denies drug-haven Stadium nightclub a license to reopen

Stadium nightclub before it got shut down forever.

Jakarta’s infamous nightclub, Stadium, was permanently closed back in May 2014 after a police officer was found to have overdosed in the club.

There have long been whispers that Stadium would reopen in some form, most recently spread by the popular Jakarta100bars website, which reported that guards outside the club had said renovations had been done in anticipation of the legendary nightlife spot reopening in August.

It looks like the rumors of a planned reopening were right, but it also looks like it is definitely not going to happen.

The nightclub’s management did in fact apply for a new nightclub license from the Jakarta provincial government, only to be abruptly turned down.

“They applied [for the license] again under a new name, ‘The Legend’,” said Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, as quoted by Vivanews today.

It seems that to Ahok, a new name for the nightclub wouldn’t necessarily mean a change in its modus operandi. After all, Stadium nightclub was known as one of the easiest places to score drugs in Jakarta when it was open.

Ahok said the Jakarta provincial government has no tolerance for nightclubs if they’re found guilty of allowing drug consumption or transactions on their premises. Nightclubs that are found to violate the rule twice would be permanently shut down, as was the case with Stadium.

Not only that, Ahok said that Stadium’s management would never open another nightclub under any name, anywhere in the city.

“As long as there’s the possibility that the establishment would be used for drug abuse, I won’t let it [open],” he said.
