Governor Ahok confirms 3-in-1 will return, but only for afternoon rush hours

Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama today confirmed that the 3-in-1 carpooling scheme on Jakarta’s main roads is returning after its trial removal, which is ending on May 14.

The Jakarta Transportation Agency last week recommended the reinstatement of 3-in-1 after it assessed that traffic volume had increased during its trial removal period. Ahok seems to have taken the agency’s assessment into consideration, including their data that traffic conditions were significantly worse during afternoon rush hours.

“It’ll only apply in the afternoon, we’ll still get rid of the morning [3-in-1]. It’s easier to control the flow of people coming out of their offices in the afternoons,” Ahok said, as quoted by Kompas today.

Ahok added that it’s likely that the new 3-in-1 window in the afternoon will be longer than the previous version. The transportation agency recommended that it should apply from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Prior to the trial removal, the 3-in-1 carpool scheme applied on busy central business district streets such as Jalan Sudirman and Jalan MH Thamrin from 6 am to 10 am and again from 4:30 pm to 7 pm every weekday.
